Electrical Transmission and Distribution Construction and Maintenance Company Limited is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, suppliers, visitors, and other persons. This commitment is not only a moral and legal responsibility but also a fundamental prerequisite for achieving the Company's primary mission of delivering efficient, effective, reliable, and safe electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The Company is equally committed to ensuring that its operations do not expose members of the public to risks of injury, ill health, or property damage.

The Company shall ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 2003 (Act No. 5 of 2003) and all regulations made under it by:

• Providing and maintaining installations, systems and procedures of work that are safe;
• Providing information, instructions, training and supervision to ensure the safety and health at work of every employee;
• Consulting and cooperating with the safety and health committee in ensuring safety and health at work;
• Providing and maintaining personal protective equipment and other safety equipment and ensuring that they are used when required;
• Ensuring that all statutory legislation relating to safe driving and the use of vehicles is complied with;
• Ensuring that best practices in relation to driving standards, journey planning, rest breaks, and restrictions on the use of mobile communication devices such as mobile phones are promoted;
• Providing leadership and resources necessary to implement this policy;
• Setting and monitoring safety and health objectives to improve employee safety and health; and
• Continuously reviewing and improving the organization’s safety and health performance.

ETDCO recognizes that occupational safety and health is an integral part of every business activity and is fundamental to the successful and sustainable delivery of electrical transmission and distribution construction and maintenance services by ensuring safety and health at work, employees and all other persons associated with the company, where all stakeholders must fulfil their own obligations under the law to protect their own safety and health and that of others around them.

The General Manager considers the promotion and maintenance of high safety and health standards as one of the most important duties of his office and will ensure that appropriate resources, including human and financial, are committed towards implementing the policy across all company operations and communicating the same to all employees and stakeholders. The Board of Directors and Management Team are committed to taking all reasonably practicable measures to ensure the effective implementation of this policy. Occupational safety and health management will be pursued in the same manner and with the same vigor as other managerial objectives.

Responsibilities of All Stakeholders

ETDCO will make every reasonable effort to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of its employees and all other persons associated with or affected by its activities.

However, the Company recognizes that safety and health is a shared responsibility. All employees, contractors, suppliers, visitors, and other stakeholders are required to comply with applicable legal requirements, Company safety rules, procedures, instructions, and safe systems of work. Each person has a responsibility to protect their own safety and health and to take reasonable care to prevent harm to others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.

Management is therefore committed to providing the leadership, resources, systems, competent personnel, training, information, and supervision necessary to protect employees, contractors, visitors, members of the public, and other persons who may be affected by the Company's operations.

The Company shall promote a positive safety culture in which every person is encouraged and empowered to identify hazards, report unsafe conditions and incidents, participate in safety and health initiatives, and take appropriate action to prevent injury, ill health, damage, and loss.
